Have been re-reading a brief introduction of the historical/political/social/cultural setting and context for Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection. Was reminded of how Alexander ‘the Great’ and his rapid empire expansion (336-323 BC) created widespread hellenization and ‘international’ use of the Greek language. The spread of the Greek language was further compounded by its common use throughout the Roman empire. All of this made the spread of Christianity all the more rapid after Jesus died and rose again.
The handy book above was something I discovered during 2nd year of Moore College, and gives a really excellent introduction to the historical setting of the gospels, a detailed explanation of how the canon of the Bible was finalised, the quest for the historical Jesus, and explanations of the four gospels and Acts – highly recommended.

James is ‘car-razy’. Pictured is one of his favourites. He also has a Hot Wheels red Lexus he calls ‘Lexi’. Campbell is easier, he only like one toy car and its name rhymes with ‘rum’.

There was a comment in our monthly ‘rag’ in the Valley that Christians shouldn’t be spending money on the Jesus All About Life campaign, but instead doing good works. I was pondering this comment this morning while helping the concrete pouring team laying down a section of the community pathway this morning (a volunteer community project). Four of the five on the team were older blokes who trust in Jesus for their lives – one a former senior TAFE administrator, another a club manager, another a former banker from Switzerland who moved to the Valley to start a B ‘n’ B. Then I thought about those four Christians, all living in the Valley, and each of their contributions to the local community over the years. ‘Between them: helping widows with pastoral and practical care, giving support to local divorcees over the years, mediating in disputes, sacrificing probably years of time between them for community projects, one tutoring High School students in French at virtually no cost just to help them through the HSC, being generous landlords in the Valley, leaders of the community – then I thought of that comment again.
